If anyone thought it was suspicious that Julia and I were taking the exact same days off, no one said anything. It helped that we agreed to tell as few people as possible. Sheâd had to tell Liam because he was the one in the office on those days, but I got Zane to cover training the recruits for me and didnât tell Liam or Bryant a thing.
âYou owe me more beer,â Zane bitched when I finally twisted his arm hard enough that he agreed to cover for me. âAnd if Liam and Bryant find out about this, donât think Iâm going to be your second. Youâre going to get your ass kicked on your own.â
âNoted, asshole. Thanks for covering.â
His words had given me momentary pause, but when I woke up on Thursday morning and found Julia already in my kitchen, making us snacks for the drive, I decided that anything Liam and Bryant did to me would be worth it. She was wearing cut off shorts that showed her slim, tan legs. Her curly hair was back in a high ponytail, and she was wearing a baggy t-shirt that slipped off her shoulder and rose up over the waistband of her shorts whenever she lifted her arms, showing her smooth, tan midriff.
âMan did I miss out on college girls,â I said, grabbing her around the waist and kissing her.
âNever too late,â she hummed, pulling away to finish making what looked like an entire loafâs worth of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
I stared at it. âYou know we can stop along the way, right? They have these things called gas stations and restaurants.â
She put the knife to her lips like she was thinking. âTell me more about these restaurants. Do they serve anything a health nut such as yourself would be willing to eat?â
âIâll eat anything when Iâm on vacation.â I laced my fingers together and stretched my arms up over my head, feeling the fantastic truth of it sink in. I was on vacation with Julia. No one expected her back until Monday. We had the next four full days together.
Julia finished making the sandwiches anyway, bagged them, put them in the cooler, and then we were on our way. I drove us out of Boston, feeling the pressure of constantly having to look over our shoulders lift away. I could tell Julia was feeling it too. Sheâd found an upbeat song on the radio, the one theyâd been beating us over the head with all summer. Iâd despised it before now, but with Julia dancing in the seat next to me, her red hair bouncing around, I suddenly realized it was a fucking awesome song. We sang along, both surprised to realize we knew all the words.
âItâs because itâs like the simplest chorus ever,â she rationalized. âNot because we like it.â
âWe kind of like it,â I snorted. âWeâve listened to it three times now.â
It was ubiquitous across all the radio stations, and every time we caught the beat of it, we let it play out.
